Identifying innovation beyond the headlines

While major blue chips dominate the ASX, many of the most dynamic investment opportunities emerge in smaller, more agile companies. These innovators are reshaping industries across finance, resources, and telecommunications. As Emanuel Datt, Chief Investment Officer at Datt Capital, explains:

“True disruption comes from companies that deliver faster, cheaper, and better solutions for their customers.”

In this Buy Hold Sell discussion with Livewire, Emanuel shared his views on several ASX-listed disruptors redefining their sectors and highlighted what sets genuine innovators apart from the hype.

What defines a successful disruptor

Emanuel believes two core attributes drive enduring disruption: innovation and execution.

“It’s not enough to have a new idea (...). A company must execute effectively, delivering real value and efficiency to its customer base.”

Disruptors often leverage technology and data to improve cost structures or create entirely new markets. From fintech challengers simplifying banking to mining technology firms enhancing exploration efficiency, innovation is being commercialised faster than ever. For discerning investors, these trends can open access to undervalued opportunities across the small and mid-cap universe.

Generation Development Group (ASX: GDG)

Emanuel rated Generation Development Group as a Buy, noting the transformative impact of its Lonsec acquisition.

“This transaction expanded their addressable market and gave them a platform for new product launches,” he said.

While GDG is widely held, Emanuel views this as justified by its growth potential. He also pointed to potential tailwinds from superannuation reforms that could benefit the group’s investment bond structure.

For investors seeking diversified, less volatile investments, GDG illustrates how innovation within financial services can deliver scalable growth.

Imdex (ASX: IMD)

Mining technology leader Imdex is another Buy in Emanuel’s view.

“As mineral deposits become deeper and harder to access, advanced instrumentation is essential,” he explained.
“Imdex is the market leader and is priced reasonably given its strategic importance.”

Imdex’s cloud-connected drilling and data solutions enhance productivity and reduce exploration costs, qualities that align well with Datt Capital’s research focus on companies with sustainable competitive advantages and strong cash generation potential.

Judo Capital (ASX: JDO)

Emanuel placed Judo Capital as a Hold, citing its narrow loan book and exposure to small-business risk.

“During periods of uncertainty, SME lenders can face outsized headwinds,” he said.

While Judo’s customer service model is distinctive, Emanuel noted challenges from funding costs and margin pressure, preferring to wait for more attractive entry points.

This perspective reflects Datt Capital’s disciplined approach to risk management, a cornerstone of its Absolute Return Fund.

Emanuel’s Pick: Superloop (ASX: SLC)

Among emerging telecom challengers, Emanuel favours Superloop.

“Superloop has completed most of its capital expenditure phase and is now focused on growing its customer base,” he said.
“The strategic partnership with Origin Energy was a smart move that accelerates scale.”

He views the company’s position in the telecommunications ecosystem as particularly compelling for investors seeking long-term capital growth through overlooked investment opportunities.

Where innovation meets discipline

Disruption remains one of the most powerful forces driving market opportunity. Yet, as Emanuel emphasises, sustained success depends on disciplined execution, balance sheet strength, and alignment with customer needs. This mindset underpins every investment decision here at Datt Capital, from our Small Companies Fund to Absolute Return Fund strategies.
