The Rule We Invest By

Investment Objective & Strategy

{01}

Back Future Leaders

The Fund targets small and micro-cap Australian businesses with the potential to become tomorrow's blue-chip companies. We focus on scalable models, founder alignment, and strong balance sheets, before the market catches on.

{02}

Outperform the Index

The Fund aims to outperform the S&P/ASX Small Ordinaries Accumulation Index over a rolling five-year period. Performance is driven by independent security selection rather than index replication or passive market exposure.

{03}

High Conviction

The portfolio holds 15–25 concentrated positions, sized by conviction and risk-adjusted return potential. We allocate meaningfully to our best ideas, and hold cash when compelling opportunities are scarce.

{04}

Independent Research

Every investment decision is driven by original, bottom-up analysis conducted entirely in-house. We assess competitive advantage, management quality, capital allocation, and valuation, free from broker influence or consensus views.

"We think that the small cap opportunity is so compelling... The real objective for us is we really want to discover the blue chip companies of tomorrow, today, effectively using the same investment and portfolio management approaches that we've used with our initial fund."

FAQs

FAQs

What does the Small Companies Fund invest in?

The Fund invests in 15–25 Australian small and micro-cap companies outside the ASX100 across multiple sectors. Investment decisions are based on fundamental, bottom-up research focused on long-term growth potential, competitive advantage, and balance sheet strength, not short-term market momentum or index composition.

What is an Australian small cap fund?

A small cap fund invests in companies with smaller market capitalisations, typically those outside the largest 100 companies on the ASX. These businesses are often earlier in their growth lifecycle, less efficiently covered by analysts, and can offer higher long-term return potential for investors willing to accept higher short-term volatility. The Datt Small Companies Fund focuses specifically on ex-ASX100 Australian companies with strong fundamentals and scalable growth potential.

How does the Fund Invests in Australian Small Companies?

The Fund invests across the small cap lifecycle, from emerging disruptors to established compounders. Companies are selected based on structural growth drivers, sustainable competitive advantages, management quality and capital discipline, and attractive valuation relative to intrinsic value. This approach gives investors access to opportunities in Australian small companies that may not yet be widely recognised by the broader market.

How is this different from a small cap index fund or ETF?

An index fund or ETF provides broad exposure to the small cap market by replicating the index — including underperforming or deteriorating businesses. The Datt Small Companies Fund is actively managed and benchmark-aware but not benchmark-driven. It seeks to outperform the small cap index through independent research and selective capital allocation, concentrating only in the Fund's highest-conviction opportunities rather than spreading exposure across the full index.

Who are eligible to invest in the Fund?

The Fund is available to wholesale and sophisticated investors as defined under the Corporations Act 2001. This generally includes individuals with annual income of at least $250,000 for the past two financial years, or net assets of $2.5 million or more. Eligible investors in Australia and New Zealand may apply.

What is the minimum investment?

The minimum initial investment is $50,000 for new investors and $5,000 for existing investors. All applicants must meet the wholesale or sophisticated investor requirements under Australian law, or qualify for a Small Scale Offering exemption.

Is the Fund available through superannuation or SMSF platforms?

The Fund is available through FNZ IDPS, HUB24 IDPS, Mason Stevens IDPS, and Netwealth IDPS. SMSF trustees and investors accessing the Fund through these platforms should speak with their financial adviser about suitability within their investment structure.
