2 September 2026: Following the conclusion of the current ASX reporting season, Emanuel Datt, CIO of Datt Capital, says the earnings were broadly sound, but investors punished anything short of outperformance.

“The market is definitely at the point where it’s rewarding certainty over aspiration,” says Datt.
“The market is rewarding those companies that are disciplined in their capital allocation and that are focusing on the customer, growing cash flow, controlling costs and taking advantage of all the new technologies, such as AI, that are coming out to improve their businesses.
“We are seeing a lot of dispersion between companies that are doing those good things and companies that are sort of just maintaining the status quo.”

Datt says “One particular company that we feel has delivered above expectations is Bravura Solutions (BVS). It has consistently outperformed expectations and it has a very strong shareholder base that are very much aligned selling software and services.

“However, I think that technology, as a segment itself, is where we’re seeing greater adoption of AI to reduce or mitigate cost increases.
“Some disappointments have been companies in the retail sector. Online retail specifically has been quite tough. Temple and Webster, Kogan, are some these companies of this nature. We were really anticipating there to be some form of firming in the fundamentals of their business models, but ultimately the retail sector at large is looking pretty weak and the outlook is not looking positive.”
